The year "The Jazz Singer" introduced the age of talkies & the end of silents. "Wings" won the 1st Best Picture Oscar, Janet Gaynor won the 1st Best Actress Oscar for 3 films, 2 from 1927-"7th Heaven" & "Sunrise". Emil Jannings, who won the 1st Best Actor for 2 films-1 being 1927's "The Way of All Flesh"-went back to Germany with the coming of sound as his thick accent would e a hindrance. Other notable films-Fritz Lang' s sci-fi classic "Metropolis", Abel Gance's epic "Napoleon", Alfred Hitchcock's "The Lodger", the original "The Cat & the Canary" with Laura La Plante, & Laurel & Hardy's famous comedy short "The Battle of the Century". Other films starred Lillian Gish, Lon Chaney (sr.), Richard Barthelmess, Clara Bow, Douglas Fairbanks (sr.), Colleen Moore, Buster Keaton & John Barrymore.
