The nineteen teens saw the rise of the powerhouse melodramas & their zany cousins, the slapstick comedies. Newly developed studios wanted audiences crying one way or another, from tragedy or comedy, it didn't matter as long as the dough kept rolling in. And it sure did. This is the decade that gave rise to some of the longest running franchises in cinematic history. Fantomas (in France), the Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, the Perils of Pauline, Tarzan, The Three Musketeers, Little Orphan Annie, Peter Pan. the Little Princess,, etc. When in doubt, Hollywood always looks back to these classics when needing to churn out a guaranteed safe moneymaker.
