10 Gems: Starting a Franchise on a High

In this edition of 10 Gems, we select ten amazing movies that really started their franchise on a high and have long proven difficult to beat. Some of these franchises managed to retain high quality throughout (Lord of the Ring), some managed some decent sequels (Alien) but others lost their way quickly (Halloween).
10 Gems is a list series covering select themes. It has a companion series, 10 Sins, which does the same thing with a negative slant on the subject.
