New music fans may think of artists like Machine Gun Kelly or Olivia Rodrigo when they think of pop punk, or perhaps they'll be sent back to the MySpace era of acts such as Fall Out Boy and Sum 41. However, the term was popularized as early as the '90s, thanks to bands like Green Day and The Offspring, or later on, Blink-182 and New Found Glory. Most of those '90s acts all hailed from the underground scene and their influences were drawn from hardcore punk and ska, with a healthy dose of melodic sensibilities and pop appeal that allowed them to conquer the mainstream.
